Browns Memories Of Blackwoods

Brown’s Butchers Blackwood was founded in 1925 by Arthur John Brown. The business was passed onto his son Oswald James Brown in 1956 and it has been run by his son Stuart Brown since 1986, the third generation of this traditional High Street Butchers.

During those early years, other family shops were opened in Crumlin, Newbridge and a newsagent in Pontllanfraith. Blackwood being the last remaining shop to bear the family name and sadly in a few years time butchers like ours will be all but a distant memory.

Who can remember Woodwards, Woodley, Baxters, Dewhurst, Bebbs, Rogers and Knott’s? All local butchers who are long gone, assigned to the memories along with your local fishmongers and greengrocers.

People eat, work and shop differently. We have no time in our busy schedules. Supermarkets and fast food take aways control our daily lives!

Recently, buses were sited in Blackwood High Street during the construction of a new bus station. Buses were always on the main road in the early days. What memories this brought back! A bus would come from Wyllie, the shop would fill, and before you had finished serving everyone another bus would arrive from somewhere else. This would happen all day long. Everyone came by bus, we didn’t need much car parking - let alone have to pay for the privilege. This hustle and bustle of people on pavements is rarely seen today. We knew our customers by name and even had time to talk and listen. Your local shop was the source of much passing of local news and gossip between the local communities.

We have more choice now than ever before, but all under a single roof. Back then it was individual shops that lined the High Street. Who also remembers Babers Jones & Richards, Bargoed Emporium and the London Hosiery
